Saklikent Gorge

Saklikent Gorge water and walkway aboveStay at this private villa in Kalkan Turkey and visit Saklikent Gorge; the 20km long canyon is 50km from Kalkan on Turkey's Turquoise Coast. It is a lovely place to go and spend an afternoon at less than an hour away from Kalkan, to relax in the shade and cool by the water, sipping tea, eating traditional pancakes or fresh trout. Lie in a waterside hammock and pass the afternoon reading a book or sleeping. For those looking for alternative holidays to Turkey, it's also an excellent place to indulge in more energetic outdoor pursuits including canyoning, hiking or rafting.

Restaurants by cool water at Saklikent Gorge  The locals have set up a series of wooden platforms suspended just a foot or two above the bubbling snowmelt of the Xanthos River. Decked out with Turkish rugs and comfy cushions and shaded by fig trees, they serve freshly caught trout for lunch or supper and beer cooled by the ice-cold waters. One of the friendliest is Naturel Paradise (photo on left), a little away from the crowded gorge platforms, quieter and more relaxing! They can also arrange rides down the river on ringos at a fraction the price of the organised tours.

Four kilometres of the gorge are walkable after April, when most of the snow in the Taurus Mountains has melted and passed through on its way to the Mediterranean Sea. However, water levels can still be fairly high in late spring, so if you want to paddle it is a better idea to visit in late summer when the water is not quite so cold and the 4km are an easy paddle rather than a death-defying adventure! Wear footwear suitable for wadding through water, and remember, the rocks are marble and very slippery, so do take care.

Continue you on to either Tlos or Yakapark, for sightseeing ruins, or a spot of lunch.

There are also pleasant walking trails through the mountains on either side of the gorge and tree houses offer unusual overnight accommodation. Places of interest to visit from Kalkan villas - Turquoise Coast Map
